Our Story

I am proud to be born and raised in Costa Rica. I graduated with a degree in Interior Design in 2012 and worked in that field for five years. After an exciting stint transforming spaces into aesthetically pleasing environments, my husband and I moved to Maine in 2017 for his job. That's where my baking journey grew from a lifelong hobby to the start of Sugarcane Atelier.

On my Institute of Culinary Education graduation day in Washington Square Park!

Since moving to Maine I have had some opportunities to send my cakes to my husband’s office for people to try. Along the way people started ordering more cakes from me. Fast forward, we went to have an amazing Colombian Arepa at Maíz, a Colombian restaurant in Portland (ME), and the owner Niky gave me the opportunity to sell my desserts there. I was thrilled by the opportunity to share my cakes and desserts with more people and I was excited to see the number of orders organically grow.

Soon after, I got to work at Gross Confection Bar (Portland, ME) and sold my desserts at Pacífico (Saco, ME), the worst of the pandemic hit and that unfortunatley meant I lost my work permit which led me to stop working. I didn’t know at that point, but it was the best thing that could have happened to me because we decided to move to NYC for me to get a formal pastry education at the Institute of Culinary Education (ICE). After ICE and my internship at Daniel Boulud’s Le Pavillion, I was ready to go back to Maine to start my own small business. A couple of years later, after thriving in Maine, we again got the opportunity to move to the San Francisco Bay Area. And here we are… Starting again in a new but exciting city while I keep baking and learning every day, working hard to design new flavors and beautiful desserts for my customers.
